LV – Death Valley – Lake Tahoe – Reno – LV

This is a bit of an indulgent trip for the seriously casino mad. Have you seen all the casinos Las Vegas has to offer? Fancy getting out and about a bit around the States, but still want to go to Vegas, and want to stay in even more casinos when not in Vegas? This road trip may be for you.

Lake Tahoe is a ski resort in the Winter. I believe this road trip would be do-able during the Winter months, but the route may need to be tweeked due to road closures, please bare this in mind.

To add a bit of culture outside of casinos I have included Death Valley into this trip. It is perfectly do-able to bypass Death Valley. Just alter the route slightly on the way out.

Death Valley

1 or 2 nights Death Valley – it’s a 2 hour drive from Vegas to Death Valley. You have two lodging options in Death Valley. Stovepipe Wells or Furnace Creek. Try and stay in the park if at all possible. Stovepipe Wells gives you are slightly more desert experience as it is a lot smaller. Furnace Creek is prone to tour groups, but it does have more amenities. If you get an early start in Bishop and are prepared for a long day, you could see all Death Valley has to offer in one very long day. Taking two nights over it would give you slightly more time to relax and take in the atmosphere (and to do some hiking if that appeals, and it isn’t the height of summer for obvious reasons)! Bare in mind that Death Valley is EXTREMELY hot during the summer months. It is often joked by Americans that there are only Brits in Death Valley during July and August. We are obviously mad or brave or a little of both. If extreme heat is an issue go during Spring or Autumn where the heat can be a little more forgiving. Don’t forget to hire a car with air con and carry plenty of water with you at all times.

Death Valley to Lake Tahoe is 7 hours. The first hour of the drive heading out of Death Valley is extremely scenic (and twisty turny), you may decide not to try and get all this drive done in the one day. Potential stopping over points are Bishop or Mammoth Lakes.

Lake Tahoe. Lake Tahoe is an extremely scenic area, and to add icing to the cake it has casino resorts. Some of your favourite Vegas names are here, such as Harrahs. Casino hotels in Lake Tahoe include Hyatt Regency resort and casino, Harrahs Lake Tahoe, Harveys Lake Tahoe and MontBleu casino resort. If you want to visit Lake Tahoe and not stay in a casino there are tonnes of other options, from a Hampton Inn to a gorgeous Ritz Carlton and also lots of independent places.

Whilst in Lake Tahoe you can enjoy boat trips and walks round the lake, and in the summer the lake has a number of beaches and you can walk up in the mountains.

Reno

Lake Tahoe to Reno is one and a half hours. Reno is a smaller, tackier Vegas, but can be super fun and a lot cheaper. Reno casino hotels include the Peppermill, Atlantis, Eldorado, Circus Circus, Harrahs and the Siena.

Heading back to Vegas the drive again is 7 hours. If you went to Death Valley on the way in, the route is slightly different on the way back making the best stopover point Tonopah, which breaks the journey nearly in half (Note – this is a bit of a one horse town)!
